Remember when Christian Bale was known best for being a really really good looking guy? And remember how he threw that out the window to be gritty and real? Leonardo DiCaprio has been paying attention. In the first pictures from The Revenant, revealed today on Entertainment Weekly's site, Leo looks like he’s playing Bale’s gritty bearded fraternal twin.

Leo's been working in sub-freezing temperatures deep in the Canadian wilderness as he plays 19th century frontiersman Hugh Glass, a real guy who survived fighting a grizzly only to be left for dead by his companions. The fur trapper famously set his broken leg and traveled 200 miles to the nearest settlement, Fort Kiowa in modern-day North Dakota.

The Revenant will be Oscar-nominated director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's follow-up to Birdman, and true to style he's embraced a very difficult shoot to make this one happen. He's taken his film crew into areas of Canada where there are no signs of human settlement. The light only lasts a few hours each day that far north, and at night the temperature can drop as low as 9 degrees. Christian Bale is probably totally jealous he's not there.
